2008 winner

Nam Duc Nguyen will be recognized May 23rd as the 2008 Joseph Plaskett Foundation Award winner in a ceremony at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Joseph Plaskett will be on hand to present the award and to launch the First Five Years Winners' Exhibition, which runs from May 24 to June 5, 2008 at the Concourse Gallery at Emily Carr.

"We are very pleased to showcase the work of Nam Duc Nguyen and the previous outstanding Canadian graduate student painters who have received the prestigious Joseph Plaskett Award: Todd Tremeer, Ehryn Torrell, Jennifer Lefort and Mark Neufeld," said John Vogel, member of the board of the Joseph Plaskett Foundation. "We are also pleased to announce our new relationship working with the BC Achievement Foundation who will administer and present the annual Plaskett award. The Joseph Plaskett Foundation is privileged to be affiliated with the BC Achievement Foundation whose mandate is the celebration of excellence in the arts, humanities and community service through provincial and national programs."

Nam Duc Nguyen, this year's winner, received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr in 2005, and his Masters in Fine Arts from NSCAD University in 2008. Much of his work reflects popular culture and urban areas, seen through a kaleidoscope-type lens, which as Nguyen says, "reconstructs reality, [and] implies the possibility of endless transformative states."

What led Joe Plaskett to develop this award? In his own words, "It is because of love, love of many things and people. First it is love of my country, Canada, secondly there is my love of art, thirdly there is my love of youth, and a fourth love is my love of Europe, a continent that is a treasury of great art." Plaskett continues "All that is happening in art is part of a process of exploration and discovery. I hope to live for a few more years so that I can catch glimpses of the oncoming future."

The Joseph Plaskett award was established in 2004, by Joe Plaskett, providing $25,000 to support a graduate Canadian painting student to travel and/or study art in Europe for one year. Canadian students presently studying for a Master of Fine Arts degree, or who attained an MFA in the year of application, in the field of painting, are eligible to apply.
