Award Categories

Young Entrepreneur of the Year
This award recognizes success in the operation of an existing business. Entrants must be 35 years of age and under, the sole owner of the business and have been in business for at least two years.

Business of the Year
Businesses must be at least 51 per cent Indigenous-owned and operated. The Business of the Year Award recognizes business achievement and celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit in three sub-categories:
  • a one-to-two person enterprise
  • a three-to-10 person enterprise
  • a 10 or more person enterprise

Community-Owned Business of the Year
To be eligible for this award, businesses must be 100% community-owned. This award acknowledges one or more businesses owned by a community, with the intention of building a strong economic foundation for community members.
This award recognizes business achievement in two sub categories:
  • a single corporate entity
  • two or more corporate entities

Business Partnership of the Year
This award recognizes a specific business entity created by two or more parties. It acknowledges efforts that contribute to the economic well being of the area; increases employment and training opportunities for Indigenous people and businesses; and is committed to the community in which they serve.
This award recognizes business achievement in two sub categories:
  • Indigenous-Industry partnership (Indigenous ownership must be at least 50%)
  • Indigenous partnership (Two or more Indigenous partners)

Selection of Award Recipients

An independent panel of judges representing Indigenous business expertise throughout British Columbia will adjudicate the 2017 BC Indigenous Business Awards. The judges' panel will evaluate nominations based on the documentation provided and will be guided by the success and sustainability of the business.

The judges' panel will select a first place Recipient and up to two second place Outstanding Business Achievers. The judges' panel will be solely responsible for the review, evaluation and selection of Awardees. Recipients and Outstanding Business Achievers will be invited to Gala Presentation Ceremony as guests and their travel and accommodation expenses will be paid by the BC Achievement Foundation.

The 2017 awardees will be celebrated at the 9th Annual BC Indigenous Business Awards Gala on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.
