"Today we celebrate these B.C. artists whose talents and creativity bring design and beauty to functional items," said Premier Campbell. "Their work in the areas of kayaks, pottery, fashion, and furniture, demonstrates the diversity and vitality of the arts community that continues to grow and flourish in our province."
Doug Simpson of Feathercraft Folding Kayaks was named the recipient of the 2010 BC Creative Achievement Award of Distinction in recognition of his life-long contribution to applied design through the development of his world-renowned foldable kayaks.
"These awards bring well-deserved profile to some of B.C's best and brightest in the area of applied art and design," said Keith Mitchell, chair of the BC Achievement Foundation. "By honouring our artists and designers, we can help ensure the continued vitality of our creative arts community."
The three artists recognized as recipients of this year's juried awards are:
- Cathi Jefferson of Duncan - pottery
- Natalie Purschwitz of Vancouver - clothing and accessories
- Toby Barratt, Pamela Goddard and Nik Rust of Propellor Design of Vancouver - furniture and lighting
The presentation event, held at The Studios at the Shaw Tower in Vancouver, featured examples of the artists' work. The recipients each received a $2,500 prize and were granted the use of the BC Creative Achievement Award seal, signifying creative excellence.
An independent advisory panel, chaired by board member Dr. Robert Belton, dean of Creative and Critical Studies at UBC Okanagan, selected the 2010 recipients. Submissions were assessed based on creativity, originality, innovative approach and aesthetics.
Also on the jury was Sam Carter, artist, craft and design educator and associate professor at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design; Bob Campbell, curator, The Exploration Place, Prince George; Judson Beaumont, furniture designer, Straight Line Designs; and Joanna Staniszkis, past recipient of the BC Creative Achievement Award of Distinction for her textile and clothing design.
The Carter Wosk British Columbia Creative Achievement Awards for Applied Art and Design are named in honour of B.C. philanthropist, academic and visionary Dr. Yosef Wosk, whose financial support makes them possible, and for Sam Carter, B.C. educator, designer and curator.
